Pre-Order Fulfillment

Good morning to you, from a cool and rainy pre-dawn Savannah.

As I have mentioned previously, I need to close all pre-orders for the paper books before the end of the year, as it seems obvious that we will not be able to print paper until at least April. As we are a non-profit corporation, we need a very current and explainable annual accounting, and I just can’t carry orders of any kind forward into 2022.

This is really no big deal. In fact, it’s WONDERFUL, and I ask you to support it.

We will complete every single pre-order this December, fulfilling them either with beads, refunds, or converting them (by choice only) to a donation to the scholarship fund. Each option is a great value, because even refunds come with free digital copies of the books as they complete.

As we have three great options, no one should have reason to complain. So don’t!

See below.

beadwork by Ursula Raymann

In December, all pre-orders will convert to any of these three things:

a $75 bead kit (one per book ordered) delivered by the end of December. (I am making a couple of different, beautiful assortments to choose from. Those of you who love beads should definitely choose this option!)

a refund (with complimentary digital copies of each book ordered as they complete)

a donation to the nonprofit UnLAB Fellowship & Scholarships Fund (this is only by choice, and comes with complimentary digital and paper copies of books as they complete). 100% of money in this fund is disbursed to creators, and none is used to pay costs, fees, or overhead. No one should choose this option if they will view it as a commercial transaction. It’s not, and it cannot be refunded, as it will be disbursed in the form of fellowships and scholarships.

There is no need to comment, email or contact us about this, as we will be in touch with you before the end of the year.

Those of you who want your pre-orders to support the project, the research team, and who are not concerned about which month the book is printed in are strongly encouraged to choose the donation option. You can rest assured that when our books are published, you will receive a lovely author set as a thank-you for your donation. I greatly appreciate each one of you. You will receive a donation agreement and US tax deduction receipt with this choice.

This project is very important to me, and I have become humbled by the scope of it. I am re-ordering and changing our pages now partly because of the behavior of others, but also because of my growing understanding that I have a sacred obligation to present our work to my best ability, at the best possible academic and artistic standards, and that the health of our creators, of our team and our hearts, and the quality of our work must be our first and only priorities.

I also point out for those who are impatient for my finished work that every discovery we have made has already been published, immediately and for free right here on this site and also on YouTube, and our discoveries will continue to remain accessible and free forever. Bead onward! Me, I will be here in this lovely room off of the garden, spinning beads and ideas into gold until I have four whole cloths. I am finishing these tasks with love and concentration, and full-time work. I would like to finish in peace, in the time it takes.

a Flower Face Kaleidocycle, beadwork by Kathryn Shriver, inspired by Kate’s Flower Face Assembly and Claudia Furthner’s Flower Cycle

How will we ask for your input?

We will do this in an orderly fashion- I will poll you in December sometime, when we have all of our kits ready to ship and our little booklets printed, and at that time we will be making more official announcements about our 2021 and 2022 Fellowships. We have ambitious plans, a very positive direction, tons of gorgeous pages, and we appreciate you more than words could say.

HUGELY IMPORTANT: people who want the paper books need not worry that they won’t be able to get one if I cancel pre-orders. If you convert your pre-order to a bead kit or a donation, and you want books (or more books) when they are printed, you will get them at pre-order prices. It’s really a win here. I will print so many books it will make your head spin. You are on my list and will never come off. I love you.

Another nice thing here is that buying the books when they come out will support the extended creative team even more, because our royalty structure now gives back to all artists who contributed, and all who worked to write and edit the books. Supporting the paper books later is just another good thing you can do for our team. Everyone wins.

Dustin Wedekind and I back in the Day at the Mingei Museum, where the San Diego Bead Society used to meet. We always threw a Glitterganza photoshoot for the event, and we dressed in gowns, Kyle Cassidy took photos, and we have a huge collection of them to include in the Cocktail Book (the photo journey).

Dustin is an example of an original creator. He and I founded CGB together, in 2011.

The page peeks below are from the History Section that will front CGB, Volume III. It is still in process. After the first two spreads, there is a peek at 2015, before many of the European beaders joined our team.

the first years
Gabriella Van Diepen, Jean Power, Marcia Decoster, Teresa Sullivan and others were at our first Seed Bead Summit, held at my place in Tucson, Arizona, in May of 2011.

At this time I was stretching my mind, trying to imagine how we would succeed in edge cloning and casting. Kim Van Antwerp, Dustin Wedekind, Karen Beningfield and I were working together on how to present complex concepts, and how to draw crazy forms like Wings and Horns, and we were just about to see Susannah Thomson’s peyote-triangle Kaleidocycle. What a time.

Once again, everything we knew stood next to everything we just learned, and we could see that we were just beginning a journey.

Have I missed your email about the bead kit choices? I am thinking I might like a bead kit but I would like to see what my choices are before I make a decision. Thank you, Joan

Hi Kate, Thanks so much for the updates! I hate to bother you, knowing how busy you are, but I’ve signed up to receive updates, yet I don’t receive them. I just want to be sure that I’m’ on your list to choose an option for my preorder, which will be a beautiful bead kit. I appreciate any help you can give me – I love your work and have been a follower since the beginning 🙂 Thank you, Laurie Napa

During these strange times we have seen the best and worst of people. I look forward to holding the new books in hand whenever that is. You and the team have inspired me far beyond my wildest dreams. I continue to look forward exploring with you and learning even more.

It’s understandable that you have to change the way you will be handling the pre-orders. And I hope that this will help you, your team and we (your fans and customers) with handling how the pandemic has affected the way the process of the books has become.
I am willing to wait for the books, but I don’t remember exactly how many is in the order I originally placed back at the beginning of this journey. I hope that the poll in December reflects each person’s order and explains the options so we can make informed decisions.

Best wishes for the future success of this project.

Hi Kate, remember me, Lia? I always read your mails, fantastic work you are doing. Arthritis has done for my right hand, although I’m still painting.
How do I order, sorry to be thick!

Lia, if you only knew how often I think of you. We have a team copy coming your way when it’s finished, no need to order anything. Just this week, we were studying your work in size 15s in love and amazement. My love to you, across the water.

Kate, I can’t say enough about the wonderful work you are doing and the admiration I have for your enthusiasm for the positive and the way you handle the difficulties that have come up during the process of producing the books. My renewed interest in beadwork after many years is totally due to your work. I am inspired and have experienced much joy with my beadwork during a time that otherwise would have been pretty miserable. I’m sure the books will be well worth the wait. Thank you!

Hi Kate, I’m embarrassed to say that I would like to pre-order (if possible), but I’m not sure how to do it. I would like my pre-order to “convert” to a donation, as I don’t need a hard copy and really want to support your work and that of the team. By the way, COVID has been (still is) a dastardly disease that has led to social dis-ease. Thank you for taking your time with the books and for caring so deeply about the work (and about others). Very best wishes from Australia, Fiona.

You sweetie! You can easily make a donation to the team, and receive a gift book (digital or paper) and I will make sure that link is front and center when we put up the choices for pre-orders.

It’s tough, having to close out the pre-orders this way, it’s obviously not ideal for me or the team, because it’s expensive, people get mad, etc., but it’s the only way forward for me, our accounting, and my mental health. Thanks to you and everyone who supports us.

Unfortunately I suspect the price to ship the books internationally must have skyrocketed over the last few years and USPS not currently shipping to various countries (including New Zealand) it would be unfair to expect you to cough up the extra freight charges so I guess it’ll have to be a refund.

    • katemckinnon
      November 6, 2021

We can do a refund or a bead kit, but I won’t be able to continue the pre-orders at all, especially internationally, you are correct. It’s just completely impossible, with our accounting system. It’s really no big deal – you will be able to order them directly in Europe, so it’s really better for all of us! If you want to support the team, exchange for a kit when the time comes. We will be with you in December.
      Hugs! Kate

So sorry to hear that you and the team have been abused by impatient people, it’s very sad that there are such unkind people about. I’d much rather have a perfect book than a rushed one and am more than happy to wait for as long as it takes.
    Take care

For those of us who ordered two or three books can we choose for example, one bead kitcand donations? Or is it all or none? I am assuming you are including those of us who ordered the textbook.

    • katemckinnon
      November 6, 2021

Sure thing! You will have total freedom to choose where your money goes- back to you, in beads, to donations, etc. The textbook is in a bit of a different bin – I think that we will be delivering that in a series of digital downloads well before the paper books, it will be fun.

      • Janet Sherman
        November 6, 2021

That works for me but if complimentary copies of the paperbacks are going out to everyone who donates then I will take the tax deduction! Looking forward to all the pretties and reading the textbook.

Your team’s work is marvelous and inspiring. I admire the choice to take the needed time for making the books to your satisfaction. Your fulfillment options are generous, and heroic in the face of this pandemic.

The journey for this book has been and continues to be exciting. I am so looking forward to receiving my digital copy when it is ready. Your three options are great. Thanks for all your hard work. It has been a joy to be a passenger on this journey.

The challenges that are created by the Covid challenge just keep coming, dont they. Thanks so much for continuing to find ways to meet them. You have come up with great options for us.
I really enjoy showing friends the few experiments I have done so far using the warped square. And I always tell them about your approach to your work that iis such a great model for all of us – your commitment to sharing your discoveries, your working with others to more fully explore your ideas, and always giving credit to everyone whose work you show us.
    Thanks for all you do.

      November 6, 2021

      We welcome that!
All three of our options above that handle that- converting your pre-order to a scholarship donation, in which case you will receive a gift copy of the book when completed, or converting your pre-order to a refund or a bead kit. In the latter cases, you can pick up the book when it comes out, and that will benefit the entire creative team. All of those are options, but me continuing a pre-order list forward is not, because it allows people to behave badly to me and my team, and as I explained above, is not compatible with our non-profit accounting structure. Love back, Beth, we appreciate your support.

A journey can be an education. Sometimes you are the educator, sometimes the student, and sometimes you’re just along for the adventure.
Most of my journeys have had bumps in the road, but the end was always well worth the trip. My geometric beading journey has been very fulfilling, and I continue to enjoy the trip.
Thank you, and all the team, for your generosity and the excellent education that allows me to continue my beading journey!
