an open source architectural beadwork project from Kate McKinnon and a worldwide team of innovators
Good morning to you, from a cool and rainy pre-dawn Savannah.
As I have mentioned previously, I need to close all pre-orders for the paper books before the end of the year, as it seems obvious that we will not be able to print paper until at least April. As we are a non-profit corporation, we need a very current and explainable annual accounting, and I just can’t carry orders of any kind forward into 2022.
This is really no big deal. In fact, it’s WONDERFUL, and I ask you to support it.
We will complete every single pre-order this December, fulfilling them either with beads, refunds, or converting them (by choice only) to a donation to the scholarship fund. Each option is a great value, because even refunds come with free digital copies of the books as they complete.
As we have three great options, no one should have reason to complain. So don’t!
• a $75 bead kit (one per book ordered) delivered by the end of December. (I am making a couple of different, beautiful assortments to choose from. Those of you who love beads should definitely choose this option!)
• a refund (with complimentary digital copies of each book ordered as they complete)
• a donation to the nonprofit UnLAB Fellowship & Scholarships Fund (this is only by choice, and comes with complimentary digital and paper copies of books as they complete). 100% of money in this fund is disbursed to creators, and none is used to pay costs, fees, or overhead. No one should choose this option if they will view it as a commercial transaction. It’s not, and it cannot be refunded, as it will be disbursed in the form of fellowships and scholarships.
Those of you who want your pre-orders to support the project, the research team, and who are not concerned about which month the book is printed in are strongly encouraged to choose the donation option. You can rest assured that when our books are published, you will receive a lovely author set as a thank-you for your donation. I greatly appreciate each one of you. You will receive a donation agreement and US tax deduction receipt with this choice.
This project is very important to me, and I have become humbled by the scope of it. I am re-ordering and changing our pages now partly because of the behavior of others, but also because of my growing understanding that I have a sacred obligation to present our work to my best ability, at the best possible academic and artistic standards, and that the health of our creators, of our team and our hearts, and the quality of our work must be our first and only priorities.
I also point out for those who are impatient for my finished work that every discovery we have made has already been published, immediately and for free right here on this site and also on YouTube, and our discoveries will continue to remain accessible and free forever. Bead onward! Me, I will be here in this lovely room off of the garden, spinning beads and ideas into gold until I have four whole cloths. I am finishing these tasks with love and concentration, and full-time work. I would like to finish in peace, in the time it takes.
We will do this in an orderly fashion- I will poll you in December sometime, when we have all of our kits ready to ship and our little booklets printed, and at that time we will be making more official announcements about our 2021 and 2022 Fellowships. We have ambitious plans, a very positive direction, tons of gorgeous pages, and we appreciate you more than words could say.
HUGELY IMPORTANT: people who want the paper books need not worry that they won’t be able to get one if I cancel pre-orders. If you convert your pre-order to a bead kit or a donation, and you want books (or more books) when they are printed, you will get them at pre-order prices. It’s really a win here. I will print so many books it will make your head spin. You are on my list and will never come off. I love you.
Another nice thing here is that buying the books when they come out will support the extended creative team even more, because our royalty structure now gives back to all artists who contributed, and all who worked to write and edit the books. Supporting the paper books later is just another good thing you can do for our team. Everyone wins.
Dustin is an example of an original creator. He and I founded CGB together, in 2011.
The page peeks below are from the History Section that will front CGB, Volume III. It is still in process. After the first two spreads, there is a peek at 2015, before many of the European beaders joined our team.
At this time I was stretching my mind, trying to imagine how we would succeed in edge cloning and casting. Kim Van Antwerp, Dustin Wedekind, Karen Beningfield and I were working together on how to present complex concepts, and how to draw crazy forms like Wings and Horns, and we were just about to see Susannah Thomson’s peyote-triangle Kaleidocycle. What a time.
Once again, everything we knew stood next to everything we just learned, and we could see that we were just beginning a journey.
