CONTEMPORARY GEOMETRIC BEADWORK

an open source architectural beadwork project from Kate McKinnon and a worldwide team of innovators

colours

A Jellyfish Assembly, above, and two green scatter triangles, below, by Kathryn Shriver
A flexagon in round beads by Emma Malan, above, and below, some new Swirl Triangles from Kathryn Shriver, which we are wordcharing for our bead assortments.
A lovely Star Spiral created by Susannah Thomson, very nice to make off of the edge of a Casting Spine.

I can’t wait to show you our upcoming new Foolproof Kaleidocycle pattern, I’m very happy with it and it’s my new favorite assembly (although Kathryn’s Jellyfish Assembly above is awfully pretty with the flower shapes, and makes an astonishingly good brooch…) The green scatter and the Spiral triangles will be two of the faces in the demo, and our upcoming bead assortments and colourways are just right for recreating the intensity of these works. All of these pieces are in the new books!

We should have the beads all packed up and loaded into our shop in just a few days, available for exchange or purchase. I only wish we are able to send them out of the country, but for now, they are just available to ship in the US.

It’s time to turn the cats out of my lap, shut down the computers, and look forward to a new day tomorrow. There is so much going on, and all of it is Everything.

Yes, I am. I think it’s important, although it takes more time.

Hi Kate! I am on the fence about buying your bead packages because I have QUITE a stash of my own. But the colors you put together are lovely. Is it possible to list the color numbers when you make a post like this one? Also, will there be color numbers listed in the book? Thanks! Kay Houtzel

Hi Kay! All of our beads are stickered with colour numbers, and we will absolutely list those numbers in our patterns and books. It’s so important. Right now we are working with our full library of colour, and deliberately making a lot of unique mixes because part of this effort is to stimulate a range of work, rather than sending the same 9 or 12 bead colours to everyone in the world.

Regarding listing colour numbers in the posts – these are peeks at new pieces, and we are completing their word charts and colour listings now. We will include a booklet of photos and word charts stuffed with colour charts and graphic patterns with all of our bead kits. It’s all being finished right now, and it’s all fresh new colour work. Kathryn Shriver, who made many of the colour choices, is the first of our Fellowship recipients, and so each bead kit purchase is actually what supports the person making the beauty. It’s a nice circle.

Another thought on colour variation in our assortments is that if we restrict our colourways, we would have to fairly instantly buy the entire North American supply of each and all of those bead colours in order to fulfil our kit orders, and we don’t want to hoard to share, if you know what I mean.

By spreading ourselves across the entire library of colour, but applying the same design rules to each kit, we are sure to be able to offer this breath-stopping quality in all of our mixes.
